Assuming the condensate line is properly trapped, then there should be no problem. You’ll notice in the code snippet below, that it says “If discharged into the drainage system, equipment shall drain by means of an indirect waste pipe. Which means you cannot, plumb the condensate drain directly into an untrapped waste line or vent. Condensate from air washers, air-cooling coils, fuel-burning condensing appliances, the overflow from evaporative coolers, and similar water-supplied equipment or similar air-conditioning equipment shall be collected and discharged to an approved plumbing fixture or disposal area.
If discharged into the drainage system, equipment shall drain by means of an indirect waste pipe. Condensate or wastewater shall not drain over a public way.

Tweet Sewer Smell — Washing Machine Plumbing Trap Problem Recently a good friend of mine asked me what might be causing his laundry room to have a sewer smell. Obviously this was a serious problem that needed to be corrected immediately. Not only are sewer gasses an unpleasant experience but they can be a safety concern. If you smell sewer gasses in your home you should try and diagnose the problem sooner than later.
I started quizzing my friend about any recent changes in their home that might have contributed to the sewer smell. He asked me if washing machine mold might be causing the smell or some type of dead rodent. I knew there was likely something wrong with the plumbing trap p-trap which was accounting for the sewer gas smell. The culprit ended up being the washing machine hose that was incorrectly installed by the appliance delivery guys.
Read on to see what happened! Plumbing P-Traps Plumbing traps p-traps create a trap in the drain pipes which retain a small amount of drain water which in turn creates a water seal to prevent sewer gasses from entering the living space of buildings. Traps come in several different configurations but they all work the same way by trapping water in the pipe to seal out the sewer gasses.
Traps are present for all sinks, showers, toilets and drains such as washing machine drains. Typical Washing Machine Drain Connections Today most washing machines come supplied with a flexible, corrugated plastic drain hose. The hose is easily inserted into a standard washing machine drain box see photo.

The main air handler and furnace is in the attic. After the AC has been running a while, a loud noise like a gurgling or knocking, somewhat randomly but about seconds apart starts coming from the drain pipe in the mud room where the washing machine drain hooks into the wall. It also feels like there’s a little positive air pressure coming out of the drain pipe. Sometimes the AC can run for a while before this noise starts, but once it starts, it won’t stop until the AC turns off, and then it stops instantly.
The noise is loud enough that I can hear it in the living room over the TV so need to stop it. When the AC is on but before it starts gurgling, I can hear a little drip of water down the drain pipe but you have to be right next to the drain pipe to hear it. It runs in the direction of the drain pipe but because of the slope of the roof I can’t access the area where they might meet. There is no trap in the condensate line that I can see.
My theory is that condensation is building up in the line that runs to the drain pipe and after a while the air pressure and water are interacting, somehow sending vibrations into the drain pipe which is echoing out the mud room and through the house.
Township to enforce 1978 law, costing residents thousands to hook up to sewer system
Sewer Gas Smell Tips Just Below Source of the odor is usually where it’s strongest What happened just before you started smelling the odor? Did you get a new washing machine or have a drain cleaned? Does something happen just before you smell the odor? My daughter’s house has a chronic sewer gas odor problem. The odor is strong when it rains and the furnace or air conditioner is operating. The odor gets so bad my daughter and her family evacuate the house.
The existing sewer line might be below your gas line, which would increase sewer pipe installation cost. Digging out old pipe and replacing it can increase the cost to install a sewer line. Another option is the slip lining process, which inserts a smaller pipe within an existing pipe.
The “house main drain”, what many people think of as the sewer line, is the main horizontal drain line under a home. As the main drain exits the perimeter of the house it connects to the “house sewer”, essentially the outdoor portion of the sewer line. The house sewer then connects to the municipal sewer system or to a septic system. Where the house main drain connects to the house sewer, code calls for a clean out.
Because placing the clean out right at the perimeter of the home could prove inconvenient, it can be located up to three feet past the edge of the home. To locate the clean out for the sewer line, start by looking for an “S” stamped into the concrete or painted on the curb near the street.
